Management franchise explained

Poppies' traditional model: you recruit, train and manage a team of employed cleaners while you focus on growing the business.

What a management franchisee actually does

Traditionally, Poppies operates as a management franchise.

As a management franchisee, your role is to find cleaners and match them to clients to meet your clients' needs — you do not provide the cleaning yourself. This model requires strong people skills, since most of your time is spent recruiting and managing staff, as well as driving the business forward through sales and marketing. It suits people who want to lead a team from the outset rather than clean hands-on, which is the focus of our owner-operator franchise. You can compare both models directly on our comparison page.

  • Find cleaners and match them to clients to meet customer needs
  • Recruit and manage an employed team, rather than clean yourself
  • Spend your time driving the business through sales and marketing
  • Build towards a larger, sellable business as the network's traditional model

A day in the life of a management franchisee

Dan Reid, Managing Director of Poppies Leeds North West, bought his franchise in 2021 and now employs a team of 25, including an operations manager and two supervisors who run day-to-day operations.

That team lets Dan concentrate on the bigger picture: mornings are spent on invoices, customer queries and reviewing CVs, since recruiting the right candidates matters in an industry with high staff turnover. Afternoons are dedicated to strategic, business-growing projects rather than day-to-day tasks, and because most cleaning jobs finish by 3pm, Dan has the flexibility to choose his own working hours. He is able to work remotely, spend time with his family, and run another business alongside Poppies. Since taking over the business, Dan has seen growth of 80%, which he puts down to being able to focus on the bigger picture rather than small day-to-day management tasks.

I have the flexibility to choose my own working hours, and it also means that I can plan the length of my days around exactly what work needs to be done.

Almost all Poppies franchisees run on a management model rather than owner-operated, allowing a hands-off, flexible approach while still driving the same results and growth.

What's included in the management franchise package

Everything you need to build and grow a team-led cleaning business.

  • Low initial set-up

Packages start far below the typical £30,000–£40,000 franchise fee, without cutting back on the support you get.

  • Low ongoing financial risk

No premises, no leases, no stock beyond cleaning supplies. Your fixed costs stay small while margins build.

  • Quick break-even

The model is designed so you can reach break-even inside the first six months rather than years in.

  • Huge, growing demand

Domestic cleaning is a billion-pound UK market, and you carry the branding of a recognised national name.

  • No premises or leases

Run the business from home with a laptop and a decent broadband connection. Add a shop front later only if you want to.

  • Recurring income streams

Regular cleaning contracts create repeat business, so the clients you win this month keep paying next year.
